Virginia Paving Company, through local friends of Jacox Elementary, has assisted in upgrading several playground areas for the school. Teams replaced sidewalks, creating concrete paths for tricycle riding during recess time. The project, which was completed in two weeks in preparation for the school being reopened after summer break, was part of the company’s 2019 goal to assist local schools within the community. As such, VPC performed the project at no cost to the school.
Regional Operations Manager Lonnie Minson describes the charity job as one of the most rewarding projects taken on by Virginia Paving Company. “The project definitely put a smile on the faces of our team members, as we looked forward to Jacox teachers sharing the excitement of the work with the children when they return to school.”
In addition to the sidewalks being replaced, the school’s playground equipment including slides and climbing equipment were repaired for safer use by the students. Unsalvageable equipment was removed as well and replaced with mulch and landscaping, all intended to help create a safe and enjoyable environment for children at Jacox. That message of safety-first was reinforced on the project-side as well, with Virginia Paving teams incorporating “watch out for kids” discussions into their JSA meetings each morning, in preparation for the approaching school year. Excellent work by Foreman Eugene Magee and his entire team!
